Make your own Face Mask
In the times of Corona Virus, wearing masks is one means of providing a little more protection from the virus when we are out and about doing our necessary errands (which we are of course keeping to a minimum and only doing when totally necessary, right?)
That said, N95 masks that are recommended are not only in short supply, but important for us to save for medical workers and those caring for infected loved ones. So what a great time to learn to make your own face masks!
Please note that home made masks are NOT considered protection against the virus. They may be better than not wearing anything, and of you are infected without realizing they make you less likely to spread it, but it is still possible for the virus to pass through them. These masks are mostly to serve as a reminder to keep you from touching your face and being more conscientious and careful when you are out. I am working on an ebook and a video that will have more instructions, but here is the pattern and visuals to get you started

I brought the original masks I used to make the pattern back from southeast Asia, intending to use them as dust masks for construction projects. They are 3 layers- a thin, tightly woven cotton outer layer, and inner foam layer, and a mesh layer closest to the face. With fabrics stores largely closed, we all probably need to use what we've got, maybe cutting apart some of those clothes you don't wear any ore and keep meaning to donate but haven't gotten around to it? Just be sure you use a tight woven cloth. I made my prototypes with two layers, a thin muslin inside and a canvas outside, and left a gap between the two layer to insert a removable layer in the middle for added protection. I have sewn these both by hand and with a sewing machine, either works, just be sure to use small stitches if hand sewing them.
