Connection and Empowerment through Ancestral Skills
The goal of Buckskin Revolution is helping people feel connected to their wildest, freest selves, to their human community, and to the living world around them. It is to teach them the skills to gather and create the things they need for daily living- clothing, shelter, food, containers and more. It's about helping people feel empowered to choose a life for themselves rather than feeling trapped in the system. While all of these skills can be considered survival skills, the goal of buckskin revolution is not merely to teach people how to survive, but rather how to live well and how to thrive!
We offer education in a variety of ancestral, off-grid living and primal life skills through workshops, books, videos and on line courses, and make and sell tools, tool kits, sewing kits and more.
My name is Woniya Thibeault, and I am the woman behind Buckskin Revolution.
Ancestral skills have been my passion since I was a tenneager.
I grew up in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains with parents who got me out hiking in them as often as possible. A love for the natural world has always been a part of me, as has a drive to make things with my own two hands, and a longing for the lifestyles of pre-colonization and pre-industrial revolution peoples. Discovering skills gatherings and a community of people who practiced and taught ancestral skills when I nineteen years old opened up my world and inspired me to devote myself to these skills. I have been studying, practicing and teaching them since the mid 1990s. With both a masters degree in Environmental Science and a hands on education in ancestral skills, I strive to combine knowledge of the natural world with the physical skills of our human ancestors.
I teach a wide range of topics, but I call my business Buckskin Revolution because helping people learn to sew beautiful, durable buckskin clothing from brain tanned buckskin has long been a specialty of mine. This is not only because it is an amazing and magical material, but because of what it does for the wearer and what it represents.
Wearing buckskin is a deeply sensory experience- the feel of it on your skin, the sight of it, its smoky smell in your nose, It is a reminder, a link to our human past. We can all trace our lineage back to ancestors who wore buckskin, or something very similar. It speaks to that place inside us that remembers what it feels like to know the world around us intimately, to shape the substance of our lives from the raw materials around us. Wearing it reminds us what it is to be human and to feel connected to the wild within and around us.
The Buckskin Revolution is not just making buckskin clothing, or harvesting wild foods or survival skills, it is about inspiring and enabling people to do more for themselves and to be freer, healthier, wilder, more content and more connected human beings.
Viva la revolution!
