Last week, the Obama Administration announced that the Amrcy Corps of Engineers will deny the permit for Energy Transfer Partners to drill beneath Lake Oahe. While not a permanent stop, it is a huge step in the right direction. The delays in drilling have cost the company millions of dollars. On January 1, investors will have the choice to pull out of the project. It remains importnat to put pressure on the investors (find lists at NO DAPL website listed below) to pull out of the project and stop it permanently!
Buckskin Revolution Stands with Standing Rock
Though given little media attention, there is a struggle of huge proportions happening right now in Standing Rock,North Dakota, where native peoples and their allies are fighting to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline, a $3.8B, 1,100 mile fracked-oil pipeline currently under construction. This pipeline is slated to cross Lakota Treaty Territory at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation where it would be laid underneath the Missouri River, the longest river on the continent and source of water for the whole area. The likelihood of future spills contaminating this water are very high, not to mention the damage done by the drilling and construction itself. The peaceful protestors on site have been met with increasing violence and the issue is becoming critical as winter sets in and an eviction order has been issued to the camps.
If you are inspired by buckskin, I urge you to stand in solidarity with Native people in North America and support the people of Standing Rock in their current struggles to protect the water they depend on and fight the legacy of exploitation of native lands.
